How much a new garage door costs in South Florida depends on four things: the size of the opening, the material, whether the door has to meet High-Velocity Hurricane Zone rules, and what else gets replaced with it, like springs, tracks, and the opener. Nationally, a replaced garage door averages about $2,500 installed. A wind-rated or impact-rated door built for Broward or Palm Beach County usually costs more than a basic door, because it is heavier and stronger. A written, itemized quote for your opening is the only number you should plan around.

Below is what goes into that number, where the money actually goes, and how to compare quotes without getting burned.

The national numbers, and why South Florida runs higher

National cost guides give you a starting point. Bob Vila's garage door replacement cost guide, which draws on Angi and HomeAdvisor data, puts the typical installed range at $1,500 to $6,000, with a national average of about $2,500 for labor and materials.

Those figures cover the whole country, and most of the country does not have to plan for hurricanes. In South Florida, a few things push the price up:

  • Wind-load requirements. Every new garage door here has to meet the Florida Building Code's wind requirements for your address. Broward County is part of the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ), which has the strictest product approval rules in the state. A door rated for those pressures has heavier-gauge steel, extra struts, and reinforced hardware.
  • Impact rating. Many homeowners choose impact-rated doors so they don't need shutters or bracing during a storm. Impact doors cost more than wind-rated doors that aren't impact rated.
  • Permits and inspections. Replacing a garage door in Broward and Palm Beach County usually requires a building permit, and the door's product approval paperwork has to match what gets installed. We cover the details in Do I Need a Permit to Replace a Garage Door in Broward or Palm Beach County?
  • Salt air and sun. Coastal homes and homes with a west-facing garage need finishes and hardware that hold up to corrosion and UV. Better finishes and galvanized or stainless hardware cost a little more up front and save money later.

A national average is a sanity check. Your actual quote depends on your opening, your wind zone, and the door you pick.

What drives the price of a new garage door

1. Size of the opening

A single-car door (usually 8 or 9 feet wide) costs less than a 16- or 18-foot double door. A wider door needs more material, heavier springs, and often more reinforcement to meet the same wind load. Three-car garages with one double and one single door cost the most, since you're buying two doors and two sets of hardware.

2. Material

Bob Vila's guide lists these typical ranges by material:

MaterialTypical door cost range
Aluminum$600 – $2,900
Steel$650 – $3,200
Composite$650 – $4,800
Vinyl$800 – $2,500
Wood$900 – $4,500

In South Florida, insulated steel is the most common choice because it balances price, strength, and wind performance. Aluminum-and-glass and full-view doors look great on modern homes, but a wind- or impact-rated glass door costs noticeably more. Real wood is beautiful, but it fights our humidity and needs regular upkeep. 3. Wind rating and impact rating

This is the biggest cost difference between a South Florida garage door and the one in a national price guide. A door's wind rating depends on its design pressure, measured in pounds per square foot. The required pressure depends on your home's location, exposure, and opening size. Homes closer to the coast, or with large openings, need higher ratings. Your installer should confirm the required design pressure before quoting, not after. Learn more in Does My Garage Door Have to Be Hurricane-Rated?

4. Insulation

Insulated doors cost more than single-layer doors, but they're quieter, stiffer, and keep an attached garage cooler. If the garage is a workshop, gym, or laundry space, insulation is usually worth it. See Are Insulated Garage Doors Worth It in South Florida?

5. Windows and style

Window inserts, carriage-house overlays, decorative hardware, and custom colors all add cost. Windows in a wind-rated door have to be rated too, and impact glass costs more than standard glass.

6. What comes with the door

This is where quotes differ the most. Ask whether yours includes:

  • Removal and haul-away of the old door
  • New torsion springs sized to the new door's weight
  • New tracks, rollers, hinges, cables, and bottom seal
  • New weatherstripping along the sides and top
  • Permit fees and inspection scheduling
  • Opener work: reconnecting your existing opener, or a new one

If your opener is old or undersized for a heavier wind-rated door, replacing it at the same time is often smarter than paying for a second visit later. Bob Vila's guide puts a new automatic opener at roughly $220 to $520, depending on the model. Our garage door opener guide explains how to size one correctly.

Repair or replace?

Not every problem needs a new door. A broken spring, a frayed cable, an off-track door, or one dented section can usually be repaired for a fraction of what a new door costs. At Ultra Garage Doors, repairs start at $70.

Replacement makes more sense when:

  • The door isn't wind-rated and you want real hurricane protection
  • Several panels are dented, rusted through, or delaminating
  • The door is so old that replacement parts are hard to find
  • You're paying for repairs over and over on a tired door
  • You're selling the house and want a quick curb-appeal upgrade

A replacement may also lower your homeowners insurance premium. A properly documented wind-rated door can count toward wind mitigation credits. We explain how in Can a New Garage Door Lower My Homeowners Insurance in South Florida?

How to compare garage door quotes

Two quotes that look $600 apart may not be quoting the same job. When you compare, check that each one lists:

  1. The exact door model and size, not just "steel door."
  2. The design pressure rating and the Florida Product Approval or Miami-Dade NOA number.
  3. Whether it's impact-rated or only wind-rated.
  4. Springs and hardware. New or reused? Springs should be matched to the new door's weight.
  5. The permit, and who pulls it.
  6. The warranty, from both the manufacturer and the installer.
  7. The timeline, including how long until the door arrives.

Watch out for a quote that's far lower than the others. It may be quoting a door that isn't rated for your address, reusing worn springs, or skipping the permit. Any of those can cost you more later, especially at inspection, at resale, or after a storm.

How long does installation take?

Once the door arrives, most single- and double-door replacements are installed in one day. Custom colors, glass, and impact-rated models can take longer to arrive from the manufacturer. Permit timing varies by city. To get ready for install day, see How to Prepare for Your New Garage Door Installation.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a new garage door cost on average? National guides put the average installed cost at about $2,500, with most projects between $1,500 and $6,000. In South Florida, wind-rated and impact-rated doors usually land toward the higher end because of code requirements.

Do I need an impact-rated garage door in Broward or Palm Beach County? Every new door has to meet the wind-load requirements for your address. Impact rating is a separate choice. It means the door can take debris strikes without needing shutters. Many homeowners choose it for peace of mind and possible insurance credits.

Does replacing a garage door require a permit in South Florida? Usually, yes. Most cities in Broward and Palm Beach County require a building permit for a garage door replacement, and the installed door has to match its product approval.

Should I replace my garage door opener at the same time? If your opener is more than about 10 to 15 years old, or isn't powerful enough for a heavier wind-rated door, replacing it during the same visit usually saves money and time.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door? Repairs like springs, cables, rollers, or a single panel almost always cost less. Replacement makes sense when the door isn't wind-rated, has widespread damage, or keeps needing repairs.
